People often ask what do vegetarians eat? The first thing that springs to mind for meat eaters is usually being deprived of fast foods such as hamburgers, takeaways or never being able to eat out at restaurants, also have anything other than boring lentils, or green leaf salads. However, this is not the case at all, there are a number of delicious and healthy vegetarian options which can be substituted. As an example the burger, vegetarian burger patties are now readily available in most supermarkets and can even be made using simple ingredients such as rice, lentils, oats and Quore. Other simple and tasty at home options include meals such as spinach and ricotta cannelloni, rather than meat based pasta, vegetable based soups, omelettes, salads and desserts. In actual fact non vegetarians would include meals without meat more frequently than they realize, based on simple snacks such as beans on toast, scrambled egg, even cheese and biscuits. For the sweet tooth, fresh fruit salad, Banana split or a variety of cheese cakes. Additions to meatless dishes that you can have at home, now a days there is a huge variety of vegetarian options available at most restaurants which are equally as satisfying and tasty as dishes with meat. Indian food for example includes a vast number of vegetarian choices from entree’s such as onion bhajis and poppadom’s with raita dip, to mains of red lentil Dahl, curried vegetables and potato filled flat bread, and finally deserts such as sorbet, allowing for a exciting and tasty vegetarian three course meal. The fact is most types of cuisine include a wide variety of meatless meals, such as tacos, burritos and nachos from Mexican restaurants, vegetarian pastas like feta cheese and spinach lasagne and pizzas from the Italian, fresh stir-fried vegetable dishes available when dining at Chinese and Thai style restaurants, the list goes on. So while at first it seemed difficult to comprehend how it is easy to find as many vegetarian options as it is for meat it can be seen that there is a lot of choice. So there is a plus side to knowing that there is readily available variety of vegetarian food both at home and whilst dining out, there are the benefits of eating much healthier choices whilst having a meal out with family or friends. So there is no need to run scared of the vegetarian options in this day and age, its merely a daunting thought to the uneducated. The truth is that you could eat a healthy wholesome meal that didn’t include meat and not feel deprived, without even realising. A trip to a vegetarian restaurant would be very informative to actually see what a full and varied menu contains to surprise and enlighten non meat eaters. After all what do you know until you have tried it. http://www.vegsoc.org/index.html
