Vegetarianism And Your Digestion

The reason behind the health benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle is that essentially the stomach and bowels are able to operate in a healthy environment. The human digestive systems function best when metabolizing vegetable matter, rather than meat. Fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains assist in providing the fiber necessary to allow optimum performance from our metabolic system. Sadly in most cases westernized diets are high in fatty, processed, preserved foods and meat which are in actual fact problematic to our digestive systems.

There are some severe consequences from our digestive system not functioning effectively which includes the development of opportunistic diseases and changes to the DNA of cells within the stomach and colon which can be life threatening. Other common problems with an unhealthy digestive system include issues such as irritable bowel syndrome, constipation and hemorrhoids as a result of straining. These problems are of much lower prevalence among vegetarians than they are among the meat eating population. The high fiber nature of a vegetarian diet assists in avoiding these problems in that it allows smooth and effective operation of the digestive and elimination system.

It must be considered then that the benefits of a healthy vegetarian diet do in some ways outweigh the temptation of meat and other processed foods. While it is obviously not a realistic goal for everyone to turn vegetarian based on this information it perhaps does make sense to make practical changes such as reducing our portions sizes of meat and increasing the vegetables. In addition to this supplementing meals with filling fruits, grains, seeds and nuts will provide undoubted health benefits.
